Laisa Pertet
Laisa Pertet is a zealous trial lawyer who fears no opposition. Since the onset of her legal career representing indigent individuals, Laisa has remained committed to a client centered representation style. As a Litigation Attorney on our Personal Injury Team, Laisa represents injured individuals in personal injury lawsuits in New York, Washington D.C. and Florida. Within three months of joining the firm, Laisa successfully negotiated a $100,000 settlement for a client skateboarder who was hit by a driver in Tampa, Florida. In our First Party Insurance/Property Damage Division, Laisa collaborates with senior attorneys to represent clients in complex insurance coverage disputes, conduct in-depth legal research and craft strategic arguments in high-stakes cases.
Before joining the firm, Laisa defended healthcare practitioners against civil allegations of Racketeering and Fraud under 18 U.S. Code § 1964 in the United States District Court of the Eastern District of New York brought by Insurance Companies. She argued against Declaratory Judgments sought by Insurance Companies stating their company is under no obligation to pay her client healthcare providers pursuant to New York No-Fault Insurance Laws in Supreme Courts throughout New York State. She negotiated settlements with insurance companies for healthcare provider clients who provided treatment to injured parties involved in a motor vehicle accident and were assigned the insured party’s rights under the party’s insurance policy.
Before transitioning into civil litigation, Laisa represented indigent New Yorkers accused of criminal offenses in Manhattan Criminal Court and Supreme Courts at all critical stages of a criminal case. She has selected a jury and tried to verdict a felony offense case. Litigated a severance motion which was featured in the State Reporter. Negotiated non-criminal plea agreements in cases originally charged as Felony Hate Crime Assault and even Assault on a Police Officer. Second chaired a successful Habeas Writ for a client repeatedly assaulted on Riker’s Island who could not afford his bail. Negotiated the pretrial release of an incarcerated client and the dismissal of an indictment charging Felony Criminal Contempt after her investigation proved the complaining witness was untruthful. Litigated and argued a Johnson/Odum/Mapp/Huntley/Dunaway Hearing in DWI case. Educated her former office on the new 2022 Less is More Executive Order and its immediate and direct implications on the practice.
In Florida, she successfully tried to verdict a case charging two felonies in the face of both video and testimonial evidence. Her older client was facing a 20-year minimum mandatory prison sentence for allegedly stealing a tile cutter from a vacant structure under construction. Her client confidently rejected a five-year plea offer and entrusted that she would litigate his case to a superior degree. The verdict was not guilty on all counts including a misdemeanor trespass charge. She’s picked a jury in another successful trial where her client was acquitted of all three charged felonies. Laisa has litigated and negotiated two dismissals in cases charging serious felony offenses and won a dispositive motion to suppress the only physical evidence at hearing.
Laisa enjoys traveling, dancing, learning about new cultures, long distance running and spending time with loved ones especially her nieces and young nephew.
